Cape Times Health – How not to treat snakebites

Johan Marais is a naturalist, conservationist, herpetologist, and photographer and has been involved with reptiles for over forty years. Johan has done extensive field work with leading herpetologists and has written a number of books on reptiles – his books have sold over half a million copies to date. He has contributed to a variety of magazine and newspaper articles, television and radio programmes, and is well-known on the corporate talk circuit. He is also often called upon to present talks on snakes and snakebite in Africa at international symposia and is a Basic Life Support instructor.

There are a lot of stories and myths about snakes.

There are a lot of stories and myths about snakes. It seems that because these animals are often poorly understood people frequently believe they are malicious, looking for people to bite.

The truth is that snakes are nervous animals and attempt to escape and flee given the opportunity. They will defend themselves if attacked and often attempt to intimidate and frighten off attackers and may appear aggressive until the attacker leaves them alone.

Seven years ago we lost a very dear friend. Adriaan Steyn (on the extreme right) was a good friend and regular ASI volunteer. Many folks met Adriaan during snake awareness and snake handling courses at Cradle Moon. Also known as Spook, Adriaan worked as a specialist spray painter but his monthly visits to the ASI was his happy place and he loved interacting with the public and sharing his knowledge of snakes. Adriaan was a gentle giant with a wicked sense of humour and he loved pranks. He unexpectedly ended up in hospital with a brain aneurism and never recovered. You are always in our thoughts Spook.
